14th July

The fact that howling winds have scuppered any chance of getting amongst passerine migrants on each of the last few mornings has been made all the more frustrating by the gradual calming through each afternoon and evening. This morning's passerine rewards at the Bill consisted of just a lone Yellow Wagtail and a handful of overhead Sand Martins. Waders were a little better, with 3 Black-tailed Godwits, 3 Sanderling and a Whimbrel overhead/passing at the Bill and the long-staying Little Ringed Plover still at Ferrybridge. Now routine fare on the sea included 50 Mediterranean Gulls, 20 Sandwich Terns and 16 Balearic Shearwaters, with at least 5 Yellow-legged Gulls alternating between feeding offshore and loafing in the fields. Additional randoms included a Mute Swan over Ferrybridge and a Grey Heron over the Bill.
