15th August

Migrants made the most of the return of quiet, bright and warm conditions, with a nice little arrival all around the Bill. Early season fare still dominated, with 75 Willow Warblers, 60 Wheatears, 25 Whitethroats and 15 Sedge Warblers grounded and 100 Sand Martins through overhead, but the rapidly advancing season was also reflected in the total of 14 Tree Pipits overhead. There were no surprises amongst the back-up cast, with singles of Great Spotted Woodpecker, Redstart and Grasshopper Warbler the best on offer. Offshore, another 307 passing Kittiwakes were a surprise given the benign conditions; a continuing trickle of Lesser Black-backed Gulls also left to the south but singles of Arctic Skua and Yellow-legged Gull were the only other worthwhile sightings from the sea.
